How to Utilize Coaching ??

As explained in Intro, the main Goal for cracking NEET PG is:
To be able to recall each and every page of notebooks of all 19 subjects during the stressful 3.5 hours of the main exam, that to as fast as possible.

Coaching can help you in the following ways:

  1. Spoon feed you high yield notes. These notes consist of important topics asked in Last 10 years hence making them high yield. Making concise notes makes you capable enough to have knowledge of all 19 subjects, to be recalled during the exam.
  2. Practice regular tests  in a competitive environment. Helps you to practice high yield Qs and also know  your level among your competitors and how much more additional hard work needs to be put in.

Nowadays, there is a plethora of information available in the market. Many institutes, many apps, individual subject apps, so many guide books.  Many people fall into a trap of buying/joining everything available in the market, and ending up getting more confused and lost.

Also, some people ask, if joining coaching even necessary?? There is no definite answer to that question because that depends on your current status and what help  you need from coaching.

You need to be smart regarding the resources available in the market, and choose according to your needs.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY NEED??

1. Theory

Concise high yielding Notes of all 19 subjects. Notes are any day preferred over guide books. Yes guide books correclty claim to provide you 100% strike rate, because it HAS EVERYTHING. Now doing so much may seem fancy while you are doing one subject, but doing the same for all 19 subjects with multiple revisions is an impossible task.

Use of Guide Books??
You can buy guide books for specific subjects, and read up some topics you find are lacking in your notes. Preferably add those topics in your notes.
While doing Qs, you may realise some topics are being repeatedly asked, and not given that well in your notes. Here, you can refer to the guide book, and read that topic and add the additional information to your notes.

Now, Notes should preferably be self handwritten. Coaching institutes play an important role here. Especially for subjects which involve conceptual learning, attending classes and writing your own notes is best. For subjects which involves more of factual learning like Micro, Biochem, Forensic, some other minor subjects: printed notes may be sufficient if you have crunch of time.

If you think you are weak in an important subject, or unsatisfied with your current notes, you can attend individual classes too.

Can I make my own notes without joining coaching?

If you have been regular with your studies in MBBS, and are one of those who love reading directly from standard books, have your own made notes, you may skip attending coaching classes . During your PG preparation, add on more relevant material and remove irrelevant material from your notes. I have seen such students, and have performed well too, but these are very few and know themselves really well.

Live Lectures OR Videos On Smart Phone??

Live lectures are better than online lectures ANY DAY.
-Live lectures have a fixed time. Eg: 5 days of 10 hours each. You will make your notes in the speed the lecturer wants you to, and you are compelled to complete it within 5 days. You remain motivated since many other students around you are suffering the same fate.
-Also, you can ask some minor doubts you have in bw the lectures.
-The Lecturer is time bound and hence will give you only high yielding stuff

While in case of online lectures, no matter how dedicated you are, its not possible to sit in front of your phone screen alone, 10 hours a day. So, a 5 day course may extend upto 10 days. Also in a quest to have 100% strike rate, some faculties may include extra stuff into the online videos which may further extend your viewing time.

But if you are in time crunch, and cant attend 5 consecutive day class, these online lectures are a boon for you. Also if you live at a place from where these live lectures require travelling time, you can save that by watching them over your phone. And who knows, if you are dedicated enough, you can finish those lectures faster than the live classes by using the x2 speed options. It all depends on you.

2. MCQ Practice

You will need additional material for MCQ practice. You can buy various guide books or  it can be in form of test series from coaching institutes/apps. The latter is preferred since its convenient to have everything behind a single screen plus real exam is also going to be on a PC.
There are many institutes giving test series subscription ,  DAMS, BHATIA, MARROW, PREP LADDER etc

Which one to join??
I would say, try each of them. All have some free tests as trials. See their post test analysis, are the solutions detailed enough, do they have video solutions? Is the main faculty discussing the MCQs?? Will you get exposed to enough competition?
Consult seniors in your college. Also try joining the ones where your maximum friends are going, as it helps later to discuss and compare.

What I did??

We in MAMC, have foundation course from 3rd year itself. Most of my friends joined DAMS, so did I. If you have friends around,It helps to go through the long classes. Here I made my primary notes. This was followed by Test n Discussion course in Internship by DAMS. The test series had fair competition and post test videos were really good for most subjects.
I also joined Marrow plan B (Q bank and test series), to have exposure to more variety of Qs and more competition. Number of students appearing for marrow tests were huge and the app is very user friendly. The Q bank is huge so I limited myself to topics I was weak in. I added the additional material to my main Notes.

I also attended individual classes in my drop year, to strengthen some important subjects. Dr Devesh Mishra classes  for Path, Dr Rajesh Kaushal classes for anatomy, Dr Apurv Mehra for Ortho. Dr Gobind Rai Garg for Pharma.

I gave the final mock tests (in the last month) of every Institute as I knew all of them would be working hard to predict Qs. It helped a lot, since many Qs were correctly predicted, some from each institute.

Conclusion:

Decide what are your requirements and what you really need out of coaching.
What your peers around you are doing, and what YOUR college seniors are advising you. You cant blindly follow what a topper from a different college in a different state is advising you, since their college may have already prepared them in a different way, may have hectic/easier internships etc etc.

All institutes do their best to make their students perform well.
I have friends from DBMCI performing exceedingly well, also some cracking exam by joining MARROW alone. Me and my close friend group chose DAMS. (PREPLADDER's Dream team wasnt in picture in 2018)

You should never Blame toppers for being associated from multiple institutes. Infact it just shows that all Institutes have great potential and the toppers were smart enough to know what all services they need from different institutes according to their needs.

Just don't waste too much time deciding what to join. Everyone is giving you enough. All institutes have over 50k students each,  for only 5-10 thousand seats available All India. So if a institute is claiming 5 thousand selections, there are also 45 thousand students not getting selected from the same institute.

Its you who can extract maximum out of a given service and use it best to your needs.
